A little sunburn and a lot of flying

What a great day! It started out cloudy but the sun came out and it turned out to be a great day.

I got a few flights in with the Extra and put on a smoke show for some that had never seen one. I had a lot of fun. The upgraded motor is really producing a lot of power and as always the Extra is a blast to fly.

The usual Sunday gang was out and today Todd and Mike Jr. treated us to a spectacular mid air collision between two 1/12th Scale warbird combat planes. They collided and both fuselages headed in oposite directions but without wings they didn’t fly long. lol

I really should start to take my camera with me so I can post some pics. I’ll do that next time.

May 2 4! Great weekend of flying

Wow! This past weekend was a long weekend for us Canadians and it was a great one for flying. We had light winds and sunny weather for most of the weekend. I put in a bunch of flights on my recently upgraded Extra 300 along with some stick time on my 1/4 scale Cub and of course the TRex 600FBL got a workout.

The Extra got a horsepower boost in the form of an upgrade from 50cc to 55cc. This has allowed me to swing a bigger prop and right away the difference is noticeable. My uplines are nicely extended and I can power my way through all verticle maneuvers. I was already in love with this plane and now I love it even more.

The TRex 600FBL (flybarless) have proven to be an outstanding heli. I really enjoy flying this bird and I’ve got more stick time on helis so far this year than I had for the last two seasons combined.

Monday morning a small group of us all got up early and headed for the heli field. We enjoyed the early morning calm and got some great heli flying in. I shot lots of video and when I’ve got it processed together I’ll post it here.

Happy Landings

Cough Cough Who’s Smokin?

Finally finally finally!!! The day finally arrived to get my Extra in the air again. Today was a little crisp but the sky was blue as can be, there was a light breeze and no excuse not to go flying.

Today was the day for the first flights of the 300 since last fall. Since then I’ve added the smoke system and changed the tailwheel. I checked and rechecked everything and decided that since I’ve made some changes I would put in a flight without smoke oil on board just to make sure everything is behaving as expected.

That first flight was great. With the added weight the plane felt even more locked in. Another check of a few things and then it’s up in the air with smoke. More after the jump

Good weekend for the RCAviator

Well it took far too long but I finally got out flying. I think the last time I was out had to be October. Oooph!! Way too long!

Saturday brought warm weather and calm winds. Perfect for the Stetson Flyers annual Winter FunFly. Turn out was great with over 20 pilots showing up and I don’t think there was a time when nobody was in the sky. Myself I resurrected my old Sig MidStar 40 for some winter fun. Since I had sold off the engine in this one it was replaced with a brand new OS 55AX. Let me tell you I love OS engines. It started right up, first flip and with a little adjustment it was running nice and smoothly. More after the jump Read the rest of this entry »

Sometimes things just don’t work…….

Yep that’s the way it goes sometimes things just don’t work the way you want them to. This past Sunday Ed and I headed out to the local park for a little relaxing flying.

First problem, out of nowhere the wind came up and was blowing 20 km/h or so. Not bad for the big planes and nitro helis but today we wanted to fly some park flyers. It was a steady breeze though and not very gusty so it was time to fly.

Ed wanted to maiden his new electric Pitts biplane so we got that out, check all the throws, thought it was ready to go until he throttled it up. Doh! It kept cutting out at over half throttle. Let’s try a smaller prop. That didn’t work. Nope it wasn’t going to fly that day (still not sure what the problem is). Neither of us had our laptops or data loggers so we were in no position to diagnose the problem. So that’s that.

Next up my T Rex450. It’s been flying really well lately but the motor hasn’t been in the sweet spot. So this past week I swapped out the pinion for a smaller one. I spooled it up with Ed taching the head. Made some adjustments to Idle up 1 to bring the headspeed to where I wanted it. Ok let’s give it a go. Right away something didn’t feel right. Even with an increase in headspeed climbout was not great and the motor seemed to sag. Same thing going through a few turns. So land it and check things. Turned out the pinion was too tight to the main gear. Up it goes again. Much better. No more bogging. Great but wait. What’s that wobble?? Hmmm something isn’t right. I finished the flight and gave the Rex the once over. The flybar paddles looked to be out of alignment. Maybe that’s it. But I’m not going to find out today because now the wind has really kicked up! Damnit!!

That’s it for the flying. Time to pack up and go check out the new Canadian Tire, biggest one in the country they say!
