Planes, planes and more planes
What a weekend for the RCAviator!
On Saturday I finally got out and used the anniversary gift my wife got me back in July. An hour and a half introductory flight in a Cessna 172. Since I was allowed to bring a passenger along I decided to invite Ed along for the ride. Well things had changed when I booked the flight and we weren’t going up in a Cessna, we were going to go up in a 1962 Beech. Well that too changed when we arrived and the instructor realized that after putting the 3 of us in the plane there was no room for any fuel. Hmmm that doesn’t sound like fun. So the good folks at OAS did what they could and found another plane and pilot to take us up. What a treat we were in for. The plane as it turned out was a Diamond Star. A modern all composite plane with glass cockpit and lots of other goodies. More after the jump
We took off from YOW and headed out towards the Scotiabank Place. Then we turned headed east making our way past the Parliment buildings and on to the Stetson Flyers field. There wasn’t anyone flying but we circled a couple times to get a good look. Next was off to Limoges to check out the new water park they’re building out there. Still not sure why you’d build a waterpark in a place that’s frozen half the year but hey it looks pretty cool.
After that we turned and headed back towards the airport. We had a great time and I really enjoyed flying the Diamond Star. I couldn’t believe how much the plane reacted to very small inputs on the controls. It was pretty cool.
Sunday brought a nice sunny day and so the gang all headed out to the field for a little fall flying. This day was going to be a special day as Doug, the flying farmer, was going to maiden his Folke Wolfe. Now this quarter scale beauty has been on the build table for 9 years we were all pretty excited to see her fly. Well after some tinkering with the throttle and some pre flights checks it was time for the maiden. Up in the air she went. I was at the far end of the field so I don’t know how the trimming went but she looked great in the air. I took some pics that I’ll publish later. Doug put her through her paces and all looked good but then without warning he lost radio control. There plane went on a scary adventure doing whatever she wanted and then sadly she flew herself into a stand of trees. Thank god nobody was hurt but from the sound we knew the plane was a write off. A short search in the woods and we found the debris. There was barely a part that was discernable as aircraft related. A total loss. Sorry Doug. She looked great.
Aside from the FW we had some great times with other planes. Ed, Emanuel and I put 3 identical Edge 540′s in the air and had some fun chasing each other around.
My day at the field was cut short though because I had to board another plane and head for Moncton. That’s wear I am now. Spending a late night at the ACC for some important testing.
Happy Landings
